On Broadway

Kinky Boots, Annie, Cinderella, Pippin, and countless other Broadway shows were honored at last night’s 2013 Tony Awards. Niel Patrick Harris hosted the show that from what I saw, was pretty good. With Game 2 of the Spurs/Heat series coming on at 9 pm as well as the season finale of Army Wives, you can see that my viewing time was constantly changing between the 3 presentations. Patina Miller (pictured above) won a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her lead role in Pippin, while Cindy Laupher took home an award for writing Kinky Boots, and Cicely Tyson took home a Tony for her performance in The Trip to Bountiful. Kinky Boots also won for choreography, two technical awards, and lead man in a musical which went to Billy Porter. This year’s Tonys had numerous movie and TV stars making appearances in plays and musicals. Jane Lynch from the tv series Glee made her Broadway debut as Ms. Hannagin in the revival of Annie. Tom Hanks and Courtney B. Vance starred in the play Lucky Guys, the latter taking home a Tony for best featured actor in a play. Judith Light, star of One Life to Live and Who’s the Boss took home her second featured actress in a play Tony for the play, The Assembled Parties. The Tony’s ended with a performance by host Niel Patrick Harris paridying Jay-Z’s hit “Empire State of Mind.”
