The Music of 2024

The music landscape of 2024 was ruled by pop girlies and Kendrick Lamar. We saw releases from Chappell Roan, Charlie XCX, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and more.

Kendrick did a surprise feature on Future and Metro Boomin’s track “Like That” which escalated into an all out beef with Drake. Kendrick won the beef with his track, “Not Like Us”, which put a spotlight on Drake’s creepy behavior regarding underage female actors and singers. “Not Like Us” literally became the song of the summer and is in the running to win Best Rap Song and Song of the Year at the upcoming Grammy’s ceremony next February. If that wasn’t enough, Kendrick surprise dropped his new album, “GNX”, a few days ago. That man is diabolical, LMAO.

The pop girlies ran it up this year. I already talked about Billie in my previous post. Charlie XCX ruled the summer with her album “Brat”. Ariana Grande released “Eternal Sunshine” a few months before going on press tour for her movie “Wicked”. Sabrina Carpenter released her album “Short and Sweet”, which was a fun bop. Beyonce released “Cowboy Carter”, her first official foray into a full country album. Chappell Roan burst onto the scene with her smash hit “Good Luck Babe”, then followed it with her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” Taylor Swift released “Tortured Poets Department”.

Outside of pop, Tems released “Born In The Wild”, which was a really good album, with standout tracks, “Love Me JeJe” and “Me and U”. Benson Boone, a newcomer to the male pop/rock scene, did great with “Fireworks and Roller-blades” after his song “Beautiful Things” blew up on TikTok. Shaboozey started the year with “A Bar Song(Tipsy)”, which sampled Jkwon’s hit “Tipsy” from the early 2000s and followed up with a feature on Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter”. Tyler the Creator released “Chromakopia”, it was okay, I did like the Lil Wayne feature.

There are some new artists I’ve discovered this year. Lola Young with her song ‘Messy’, Jungle, with their songs “Back on 74”, “Let’s Go Back”, and their BBC Radio 1 cover of Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather”. Semler and their song, “Jesus from Texas”.

Grammy nominations came out on November 8, and Beyonce grabbed 11 nominations for “Cowboy Carter”. Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, Shaboozey, and Benson Boone all received nominations.

It’s been a good year for music and I’m looking forward to the Grammy’s next February.
