I went to see Barbie the other day. If you aren’t aware, Barbie and Oppenheimer opened on July 21 and blew out the box office. It was sold out all opening weekend. Personally, I like going to the movies during the week, so I knew I didn’t want to see a weekend show. I went on last Thursday.
First and foremost, Barbie is one of the most recognizable toys in the world. I grew up playing with Barbies and I had the dreamhouse and some of the cars. From the trailers, the film looked like it would be fun and carefree. I did hear some backlash from Right wing Youtubers claiming that the film pushed a feminist agenda and blah, blah, blah.
The film was funny. To me, it felt like a tongue and cheek dig at feminism. I personally, have my gripes about feminism, so I enjoyed the jokes. Cinematography of the film was good. Obviously, there was a lot of pink, but it still looked pleasing. The characters served their purpose in the story as well. I think with the way it ended; they may be setting it up for a sequel.
I give the film 5 out of 5 stars. It’s currently still breaking records at the box office, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go ahead and check it out.
